Early 2016 I realised there was nothing planned locally for International Women’s Day and that seemed wrong on so many levels! I wanted to offer an opportunity for the women of the Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai area to celebrate what it is to be a woman in the world today.
The United Nations theme was “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.
And step up we did! We had examples of women and services in the community ready to support other women to step up and bring more gender equality to their lives. What we discovered was that inequality is rife but going hard and striving to ‘beat men’ or to ‘be better than men’ was not the answer.
Equality was what we were looking for and to have that, we needed respect for each other and what both sexes bring to the world.
We raised awareness about domestic violence, services and programs available to women in the area and how this is a global issue not simply a local one.
There were a number of interviews on the local community radio throughout the event with services such as Mission Australia, KYDS, Soroptimist International, local health and wellbeing experts and a local dentist who shared how the daily pressures of life are impacting our teeth. There was great engagement with the local community. As a result we have been asked to return next year to expand on the foundation set this year.
I would like to thank the following organisations who supported the event
Priceline
Event Cinemas
2HHH Community Radio
Tupperware
Fernwood Womens Gym
Gentle Rhythms
North Shore Dentistry
